BOOROOM GALLERY x DESIGN MIAMI PARIS 2026
For its debut participation in Design Miami Paris, BOOROOM GALLERY presented the work of Portuguese sculptor Rui Matos in front of L’Hôtel de Maisons as part of the Design at Large programme.
Born in Lisbon in 1959, Matos has developed a distinctive sculptural language over nearly four decades, moving from stone towards increasingly light, linear and spatial forms. He describes sculpture as “drawing in three-dimensional space”: his works function as lines suspended in space, tracing paths for the eye and the body and making their surroundings part of the work. This approach was particularly evident in his extensive practice of public art, with monumental works and public commissions across Portugal and beyond, including the 14-metre Escultura de Boas-Vindas à Cidade de Lagos, created in 2025.
For Design Miami Paris, BOOROOM GALLERY presented Matos’s House of Birds, also titled The Twittering Machine, inspired by Paul Klee’s eponymous 1922 drawing. Conceived for outdoor use, the 286 cm-high sculpture translated Klee’s rhythmic composition into a slender three-dimensional structure, bringing its fantastical imagery into a physical architectural setting.
Installed in front of the historic L’Hôtel de Maisons, House of Birds extended Matos’s longstanding engagement with public and outdoor space, while reflecting Design Miami’s cross-disciplinary approach. The sculpture responded to its surroundings and to the movement of the viewer, allowing the setting to become an integral part of the work. Its vertical presence created a dialogue between sculpture and architecture, while its changing appearance invited viewers to encounter the work from different perspectives.
Through this presentation, BOOROOM GALLERY continued its exploration of the relationship between contemporary art and collectible design, bringing together works that extend beyond their physical form to establish a dialogue with the spaces and environments they inhabit.
